🗓️ Best season: March to October — December to February for snow at Malam Jabba

The Swat River at Kalam, Mahodand Lake and the Malam Jabba ski slope.

🌡️ Live weather: loading…

Route: Islamabad – Swat Motorway – Mingora (4–5 hours), then Bahrain to Kalam (about 3 more hours).

  • Day 1: Reach Kalam. Walk by the Swat River and Ushu Forest in the evening.
  • Day 2: Matiltan and Mahodand Lake by jeep — trout farms on the way.
  • Day 3: Drive back to the Mingora side: Malam Jabba (chair lift; snow in winter).
  • Day 4: Return journey.

What to carry & what you need:

  • Cash in small notes — there are no card machines up the Ushu Valley, and ATMs are rare in Kalam (withdraw in Mingora)
  • A warm layer and a windproof jacket whatever the month — Mahodand Lake sits at about 2,865 m and Kalam evenings are cold even in July
  • Closed, waterproof shoes for the lakeside paths
  • Water and snacks for the full-day jeep run — about 2 hours each way on a rough track
  • A power bank and basic medicines
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses — the light is strong at altitude
  • A fishing rod and a local permit, if you plan to fish for trout

Note: Mahodand Lake needs a jeep from Kalam. The Kalam road is slow in patches — start each day early.
